Updated Header

September 2, 2008

I was looking at the header on our site last night and realized that it needed to be updated.  It is amazing how much the kids change in a year.  The pictures of the kids were all taken today so they are very up to date.  The pic of Rodi and I however was taken this past winter.  I am not sure why but we are hardly ever in the pictures.  Well I know why I am not in them…. I am taking them!  Not sure what Rodi’s excuse is.  Oh, maybe that he is never home.

School has gotten off to a good start so far.  No one has threatened to throw books at me or out the window yet.  You laugh but last year several papers were found floating in the pool….hmmm wonder how that happened????

This morning JJ woke up with an ugly red spider bite on her arm.  Poor thing was in some serious pain too.  So while Bubs stayed here doing school work with the other 2 (not to his delight), JJ and I went to see the doc..  She did her History work on the way and read her novel for lit. class in the room while we waited for the doctor.  I was not about to give up an entire day of classes for a spider bite.  Oh and yes she was deemed to be A Okay.

He said I was going to be good as new in no time!

He said I was going to be good as new in no time!

After a few days off from the gym (for the labor day break) we are back to class again.  12 hours a week for the girls and 1 hour a week for Moe.  Bubs is thinking he wants to give swimming a try.  We shall see how that goes.  I am just worried that when Rodi deploys again next year that I will have to hire a driver just to help with the logistics of these activities.  Oh well, one day at a time I guess.

40 minutes….

August 27, 2008

until the FIRST DAY of SCHOOL.  I am praying that I am prepared.  I spent weeks setting up the schedule hoping to make things go as smoothly as possible.  I guess the first day for the kids is more like a final exam for me.

Bubs is making pancakes while the girls change their clothes for the day.  Moe is GRUMPY this morning.  I am hoping he gets over that quickly.  He will be doing some school work today too, the letter A.

I will let you all know how it goes.

Blog…who has a blog?

June 5, 2008

Oh, I do.  Yes it is true it has been well over a month since my last post and I think that I am at least nominated for this year’s BBA  (Bad Blogger Award).  So if you are on the judges panel VOTE for me!  Wait…. I guess I should be hoping you don’t vote for me.

Anyway there has been lots going on and some things that couldn’t really be blogged about at the time.  You know sort of like when the guy on the television show says “come closer to the set …. just between you and me…”  That type of thing.

THE KIDS:

Bubs has started going taking gymnastics classes on Saturdays and is loving the class and the effects on his upper body strength.  At first he was doing this to keep conditioned for the upcoming wrestling season.  Now I am not so sure.  I think that he may just stick with gymnastics.  He let his dad cut his hair THIS WAS A HUGE DEAL!  And yes I did a victory dance once that first cut was made.  I was so sick of seeing him twitch his head to get the hair out of his eyes.  I will have to post pictures later.  I am running a tad behind on things this morning.  He took his standardized test for the district and I am happy to report we had another successful year of homeschooling.

JJ is keeping very busy with her gymnastics classes as well.  She should be getting her invitation to level 4 this week.  Level 4 is the first competitive level.  It is also and increase from an hour and a half a week to TWELVE hours a week of practice.  She is turning is to quite the young lady these days.  I look at her and see her changing and it amazes me at how grown up she is becoming.  Her braces are doing their job, thank goodness, and she will actually show her teeth when she smiles now.  She also took her test and did very well with her first year of school at home.

Nina will also be receiving an invitation to level 4 in gymnastics….. HOWEVER we feel she could not handle the 12 hours of practice a week so we are going to let her go to pre-team which is only 2 days a week 2 hours a night.  That seems much more doable for her.  I was worried about how she would do on her standardized test this year but she really surprised me and did quite well.

Moe (the monkey) had to put his super boy strength and climbing ability to good use so we…..put him in gymnastics as well.  I figure if we were already there, why not.  Tonight is his first “big boy” class.  Up until now he was in the mom and tot class.  I almost teared up when I realized that last week was my last week helping him in his class.  He loves his teacher/coach Ms. Marcia.  He looks forward to his class each week and gets rather upset when he realizes that sometimes we are going to the gym for someone other than him. *grin*

Rodi and I have been quite busy planning for the house and looking at the future.  We put in a really good garden and surprisingly things are growing quite nicely.  We are going to have WAY too much squash, considering I am the only one who likes it.  We planted 9 rows of sweet corn, way too many onions, lots of peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, carrots, lettuce, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, and watermelon.  We have already picked most of the peas and as we shelled them and prepared them to be frozen we of course had to taste a few….yummmy!  My grape vine is looking great and I think we will be making some jelly this year.  Our apple tree looks great too.  I wish I could say the same about the peach tree.

Rodi has been helping our neighbor with her fields and it has been so great for him to be out there on the tractor again.  Our herd of Zebu has increased by one and we now have another heifer named Whisper.  She is very sweet although a bit leary of the 2 legged creatures who are constanly hold out their hands wanting her to come towards them.

Are we staying in the Navy or getting out?  Well folks is looks as if we are staying in.  We did the resume thing even a really great interview.  Then Rodi had Dr’s appointment and well lets just say there a few upcoming surgeries on his knee that will be keeping us livin’ the Navy life.  We just didn’t think saying yes to a job and then saying, by the way the doctors don’t know how I am still able to walk and if I were a few years older a full knee replacement would be their recommendation, would be a great impression to make.   This fall/winter he will be having another surgery on his knee.  This one will require 30 days at home non-weight bearing on that leg with 4-6 more weeks after that 30 days of no weight on that leg.  Total recovery time will be 9 months.  UGGHHHH!  Why are we waiting until the fall/winter….simply put, Rodi would go nuts if he were laid up like that all summer long.   We are now having to make choices as to where we would like to go after his surgery as he will not be able to stay on the ship (something about stairs *sigh*).  I will let you all know more about that when I know what is going on.

I hope you are all having a great day and didn’t fall off your chairs when you saw that I had posted something.

All before noon

April 15, 2008

Maggie dug another hole in the yard.

I managed to step in the line of fire between Samantha (the cat) and Maggie (the dog) and now have a lovely scratch down my leg.

Jolly (the calf) got out of the fence again.

While I was gracefully chasing Jolly, to I don’t know, tackle her or something *LOL* I tripped and fell slid dropped with a thud to the ground, catching myself with my already injured wrist.

Moe decided Mom needed help playing rodeo clown and joined in the fun, excitement, thrill, adventure. This made Jolly run faster and further from where I needed her to be.

Maggie not wanting to miss out on any herding time with the calf, tugged with all of her might and tore the post of her run right up and out of the ground, allowing her to become entangled in a mess under our deck. To her disappointment with her lead tangled around this post and that, she could not reach the part of the yard where Roarin’ Moe and his Ropin’ Ma were showing off their rodeo skills. So there she sat in true hound style howling at the top of her little puppy lungs. What joy this scene must have been for my neighbor’s mother-in-law who had now opened the side door on the her van so that she could sit and watch the show….. NO I AM NOT KIDDING!

Back inside Bubs, JJ and Nina were reading doing handstands. Yep, study play must have been what I had asked them to do as I ran out the door to preform my Cowgirl duties. AGGGGHHHHH!

Was spring break just last week? It seems that it happened so long ago. *sigh*

Back to the grind.

*****UPDATE*******

it is now 12:06 and Moe just took a beautiful shade of dark blue marker and drew all over himself, oh and if you are wondering yes he did get that much sought after look of blue circle around the mouth.  Don’t let me forget to also mention that this was a PERMANENT MARKER!…. Only my Moe.

Gym class

March 13, 2008

Gym class has taken on a NO JOKE element here at Ponderosa Academy.  Have you heard of CrossFit?  Have you heard of CrossFit Kids?

My kids have been introduced to the WOD (work out of the day) and I am sure none of them will ever say “they call that a work out? HA, easy stuff” when it comes to CrossFit Kids.

Today’s WOD was:

Bubs-  In 15 min. complete as many rounds as possible of:

5 Handstand Push Ups (bridged on feet)

10 Box Jumps (15″ box)

15 Pull ups

JJ- In 12 min. complete as many rounds as possible of:3 Handstand Push Ups (bridged on knees)

6 Box Jumps (15″ box)

9 Pull ups

Nina- In 10 min. complete as many rounds as possible of:

3 Handstand Push Ups (bridged on knees)

6 Box Jumps (15″ box)

9 Pull ups

Bubs completed 5 complete rounds and made it through the 6th sets of Handstand Push ups and Box jumps before the timer went off.

JJ completed 6 full rounds and the 7th sets of Handstand Push ups and Box jumps before the timer went off.

Nina completed 6 full rounds.

Now I will have to admit that we do not have an official pull up bar.  We own a Total Gym (picture Chuck Norris infomercial) and it has pull up bars.  I know that is cheating a bit but the kids really struggled to get those pull ups in so I say it counts!

CrossFit is great because there is different WOD posted on the site everyday and best of all it is FREE!  There are  Crossfit gyms out there, but if you are tyring to save a dime (aren’t we all?)  this site is a real blessing.

When we were living in Germany Rodi did CrossFit with his unit, he has been trying to get me and the kids to do it for YEARS now.  Let’s just say sometimes I am slow in hearing the message. *grin*

Journal/Writing Prompts

February 28, 2008

I want to take a minute to answer a question I was asked today about my journal prompts and where I get them.

They come from various places.

Lots of help I know.Belly Laugh

I have taken some from the web and some from various books we own.

As for web sites, I often go to the following to pull a new daily prompt:

creative writing prompts

and

http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/writing_prompts.htm#1 Ribbon

The second site is a great site with tons of resources.  The first site is a good site but requires a lot of “weeding” on my part as a lot of their prompts are on a much higher level than my 11,9, and 6 year old can handle right now.

Our Bulletin Board

February 28, 2008

Here is a picture of our bulletin board I talked about in the post yesterday.  The true scrapbooker in me wanted to go crazy with background paper and all types of embellishments.  The practical side of me came out though and I knew that if I wanted to get this board up and in action I was just going to have to go for a more simple and plain look.

Bulletin Board

The kids names have been marked out in yellow to “protect the innocent” Just replace Bubba, JJ, and Nina for the marked out spots on the folders.  I would like to find a really cool cartoon bull picture to put up in the top corner.
Our new schedule seems to be working out quite well.  They start at 8am and work straight through to 1pm.  They can have a snack around 10 or 10:30 but it something that can be eaten while working.  Then at 1pm they eat lunch and are done for the day.
In the past we had been taking lots of breaks and were not on a set schedule so one day we would do math first and the next we would start with handwriting.  Things are going SO MUCH SMOOTHER now that there is a set schedule and everyone knows what to do and for how long.
We no longer go with the idea of completing 1 math lesson a day.  We instead have math for a hour and a half.  They will complete at least one lesson in that time period and then can go on to complete or at least start the next lesson.  The other day JJ took a test and finished 2 lessons.  This style works much better for her.  Bubba does better with the time method as well.  He knows that he has to finish at least one lesson but if he starts a second one he isn’t required to finish that lesson before he can move on to History or Science.  It sort of takes the pressure off a bit.
This semester we are studying:
Grammar/Handwriting/Spelling
Math
History/Science
U.S. Presidents
Typing/Journal Writing
Geography
Literature

Organizing is not my idea of fun

February 27, 2008

I love it when something is organized.  Boy oh boy, do I dislike taking my world of chaos and trying to organizing it.  It just seems like the process will never end.

Last week (maybe the week before?)  I organized our school bulletin board.  I posted (and implemented)  our schedule as well as made folders for each child to put their finished work for the day.  I put a sheet protector on the board so that I could insert the daily journal prompt and I even gave our school a name and a mascot.  We are of course the Ponderosa Bulls.  The kids got quite a kick out of that one.

This week I am trying to put together a binder where I can print off all the work for each day and keep it organized a week at a time for each child.  I am also going to put together a binder of work the kids have done that needs to have corrections made.  On Fridays they will be able to work on those corrections.  The bonus to this system is that if they don’t have any corrections or very few, they will have a free day.  I am hoping this will increase their attention to detail during the first 4 days of the week.  We shall see.

I will keep you posted.

They want their own blog

January 31, 2008

Bubba and JJ want their own blog.  I am not completely opposed but I want it to be a blog with a purpose.  Maybe like a review of their HS day or book reviews. Maybe even just a post everyday for their writing prompt exercises?  I am not sure but I do know that I want it to be somewhat structured and VERY monitored.

Are their any readers out there who know of other HS’ers with blogs?  What do they blog about?  Any ideas or words of advice?

Reminders

January 31, 2008

Bubba turned 11 this week.  Yet another reminder that the older they get the older I get.

JJ had a friend stay the night this week.  Reminding me of how different standards are from home to home.

Nina excitedly asks everyday, what time we are starting school for the day.  Reminding me of why I love teaching her at home.

Moe colored a lovely picture on his hands and the table too.  Reminding me again of the importance of out of sight out of mind (keep the markers up high at all times).

Maggie who is still not house-broken reminds me daily of why we were NOT going to get another dog.  Then I look at her and those big puppy eyes and I am reminded of why I couldn’t let her go to the shelter and had to bring her to our house.

Rodi …. well he does something each and every day that reminds me of something *grin*  Actually he usually reminds me of the many reasons I love him.   Occasionally he reminds me of why it was we were not getting another dog *grin*
